Asylum seekers assistance programs, folk festivals, conservation projects and emergency services feature in this year’s National Australia Bank volunteer awards with Victoria taking out two national prizes.

Some 48 Not for Profit organisations will share $350,000 in prize money in the 2005 NAB volunteer awards.

The seven national winners for 2005 are:

– National Folk Festival, ACT (Art and Culture)

– Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, VIC (Community Service and Development)

– Caloundra City Libraries – Adult Literacy Program, QLD (Education and Youth Development)

– Benalla Unit – State Emergency Service, VIC (Emergency and Safety)

– Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, WA (Environment and Wildlife)

– Southern Adelaide Palliative Services, SA (Health and Wellbeing)

– Sport SA, SA (Sport and Recreation)

These groups have excelled in their field, attracting the coveted top prize against all state winners. Now in its eighth year, the 2005 National Australia Bank Volunteer Awards focused on best practice in volunteering.

Winning organisations have been chosen from 1200 community groups nominated across seven diverse categories in each state or combined territories, with the ‘best of the best’ within each category selected as national winner – the highest accolade within the prestigious Awards.

State winners receive $7,000 and the seven national winners receive an additional $3,000. The Awards are judged independently by Volunteering Australia, the national peak body for the volunteer sector, and recognised community leaders in each category.

Sha Cordingley, CEO of Volunteering Australia says this year’s focus on best practice would inspire other groups to consider their own volunteering practices.

She says the variety of this year’s Award winners shows that every Not for Profit organisation can choose to provide positive volunteering experiences, regardless of their size, location or activity.

Richard Peters, NAB Head of Corporate Social Responsibility says these Awards are unique in recognising organisations that create a positive and inclusive environment for participating volunteers.

To foster best practice among community groups, each organisation nominated for the 2005 Awards will receive Volunteering Australia’s ‘National Standards for Involving Volunteers’ pack, with practical information and guidance on looking after volunteers.
