The Sydney Leadership Program is an internationally recognised leadership program run by The Benevolent Society in NSW that targets social issues. And it’s looking for new recruits for its 2006 program.

The Benevolent Society is one of the oldest Not for Profit in Australia. Its Centre for Social Leadership has held the Sydney Leadership Program for the past seven years and has received the Prime Ministers Award for Excellence.

The program encourages senior managers and community leaders across all sectors to focus on key social issues to make social impact.

The program is currently in the recruitment phase for next years’ program and applications close on the 21st October 2005.

Project Manager Monique Bhatta says the Sydney Leadership program engages people in the practical challenges of creating change in society through experiential learning, site visits, group work and Collaborative Leadership Projects.

The Sydney Leadership Program challenges participants to go beyond conventional ideas of leadership, explores new perspectives and experiments with new initiatives to have real impact on some of the most difficult and contentious social issues facing our society.

Following the program, participants become part of the Social Leadership Network to continue work on these challenging issues.

In its eighth year, Sydney Leadership is backed by an organisation of over 700 staff working on the ground on critical social issues such as child protection, domestic violence, ageing and women’s health.

Sydney Leadership focuses on social impact rather than just personal development.

Bhatta says the program is of huge value to employers, generating new perspectives and innovative engagement.

Sydney Leadership 2006 is open to anyone who believes they can make a difference and who is willing to take personal responsibility for improving society. Participants typically include senior and influential leaders from corporate, professional, public sector, non government and community organisations.

Bhatta says Sydney Leadership is a dynamic program, guided by the motivations and aspirations of the participants themselves. No two years are ever the same.

She says that during the program they build a learning network, recognising that each participant brings valuable skills and perspectives. The challenge is to develop their capacity to integrate and share these experiences and translate them into practical action.

Successful participants enter the program as learners rather than experts. They must be willing to explore new initiatives and work together on complex social problems.
Selection is competitive. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated track record of social or organisational leadership who believe they can have impact over the longer term.

The key factor in selection is commitment to the program, to other participants, to learning to innovation, to making a difference and to the broader community.

An applicant requires two nominators, one of whom may be an employer. Both nominators must have knowledge of the applicant’s capacity to be an effective member of Sydney Leadership in leading innovation in the social field and successfully undertaking a Collaborative Leadership Project.
