There is an immediate need for Australians to volunteer their skills in developing countries according to Dimity Fifer, CEO of Australian Volunteers International.
Australian Volunteers International has begun a special recruitment drive for experienced professionals to sign up to its volunteer program.
Fifer says Australians can be the change they want to see in the world by transferring their technical skills and by understanding the culture and community in which they live.
She says that more than 700 Australians from all states and territories have lived and worked in a developing community this financial year.
Fifer says the strength of the Australian international volunteer program is in its people and their flexibility, resilience and willingness to learn and share.
Australian Volunteers International is currently seeking experienced professionals, including accountants, ESL teachers, community development workers, public health practitioners, medical/paramedical professionals and engineers, to provide high-level technical assistance for two years.
In addition to sharing technical skills she says volunteers make a strong contribution to ‘second-track diplomacy’ by building people-to-people relationships and community-to-community connections.
Positive cooperation, in the form of mutually-beneficial relationships, has dimensions of peace-building and contributes to regional security.
