Promoting Humanitarian Law

The Federal Government has substantially increased the annual funding contribution to the Australian Red Cross Society to help spread information about international humanitarian law.
This year the Commonwealth’s 2001 contribution to the Red Cross program has been increased from $45,000 to $120,000.
The principles of international humanitarian law are designed to protect the victims of armed conflict and limit the effects of the conflict. The principles provide protection for those who are not, or no longer taking part in fighting such as civilians, medical personnel and wounded soldiers.
The Attorney General, Daryl Williams says the increase in funding will allow the Australian Red Cross to increase its ability to promote the principles of international humanitarian law within the community, the defence forces and the academic community.
The Minister says the increase is in direct recognition of the ongoing commitment of the Australian Red Cross to ensuring that Australian servicemen and women, and aid volunteers are well prepared for Australia’s ever-increasing role in situations of armed conflict.
