On the other side of the ‘giving’ coin, a strong corporate responsibility can only be developed through effective communication between business, the community and governments according to Professor David Birch. Professor Birch is the director of the Corporate Citizenship Research Unit at Deakin University.

He says there was a pressing need for quality research into the motivation of business towards corporate citizenship. Prof. Birch says the Unit was established late in 1997 in response to an absence of sound research into how corporations become good corporate citizens.

The CCRU is researching how corporations understand their relationship with communities as well developing new opportunities for corporate citizenship. The Unit provides a detailed quarterly newsletter outlining the most recent thinking, research results, and news and views on the latest developments in corporate citizenship in Australia and overseas.

It offers regular seminars as well as virtual seminars on the Internet. The web site is under construction but you can e-mail the unit for more information at ccr-unit@deakin.edu.au .
