About the organisation
Survivors & Mates Support Network (SAMSN) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides services and support for male survivors of child sexual abuse. We deliver groups and workshops for men and their families, and training for health professionals and service providers, while working to increase public awareness of the effects that childhood sexual abuse can have on men and their families.
About the role
We are looking for suitably qualified/experienced people to join the SAMSN team as a Trauma Informed Counsellor.
- Provide face to face, telephone and online counselling, psychoeducation and trauma informed support to partners, family members/friends and carers of male survivors of child sexual abuse.
- Provide evidence-based counselling and support to male survivors of child sexual abuse to enhance their personal and relational wellbeing.
- Provide professional guidance and training to SAMSN staff and external stakeholders to enhance understanding and trauma informed support with male survivors of child sexual abuse.
- Ensure all work operates within appropriate theoretical frameworks and professional standards, and all data, electronic records and client files, are maintained in a professional and timely way, in keeping with the organisational policies and procedures.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, and clinical supervision.
Advocacy and Support
- Provide ongoing advocacy and support to male survivors and their families engaging with government and non-government services, while fostering and promoting self-advocacy and individual capacity building.
- Provide advocacy and assistance to male survivors participating in police investigations and criminal justice proceedings; in making applications for compensation payments and redress, in state-based and the National Redress Scheme.
- Contribute to the development of resources and service responses that enhance awareness and support for male survivors of child sexual abuse, their partners, families, friends and carers.
SAMSN Teamwork
- Participate in the Duty Roster and provide the initial response to survivors and their supporters. This includes an intake process gathering relevant details and providing information about the range of services offered at SAMSN, and where appropriate discuss referrals to other relevant service providers.
- Participate in activities to support the Community Engagement team; including attending meetings and events within the community and service sector to assist in increasing awareness of and access to SAMSN services for male survivors and their supporters. Assist with the development and implementation of the community engagement strategy to target priority populations.
- Actively participate in SAMSN team and clinical meetings.
- Comply with SAMSN Code of Conduct and perform additional duties as directed by Clinical Services Manager.
The Role will Require:
- A good understanding of the dynamics and impacts of child sexual abuse
- Tertiary qualifications and experience in community development/social work or a related discipline
- Willingness and capacity to travel
- Ability to network and work collaboratively with a wide range of people

Essential:
- Tertiary university qualifications in relevant discipline (Psychology, Social Work, Counselling).
- Current registration with AHPRA (Psychologist), the AASW (Social Worker), or PACFA-Clinical/ACA Level 3 or 4 (Counsellor).
- Proven counselling experience in trauma practice. 3 years plus experience in providing trauma informed counselling to survivors of interpersonal trauma.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the long-term impacts of childhood sexual assault, particularly for male survivors.
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the challenges for supporters of male survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC).
- Provide digital evidence of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (minimum 2 vaccinations).
Successful applicants will be required to have a current National Police Check and, if relevant to the position, a Working with Children Check.
Desirable:
- Experience in working with male survivors of sexual assault.
- Clinical supervision experience and training.

Role Type: 30.4 hours per week (4 days per week) SCHADS Award Level 6
Commensurate with qualifications and experience, you will also benefit from a $15,900 tax free salary packaging component.
