About the organisation

Organisation Name : RSL NSW via People for Purpose

About the role

  • Join an environment committed to transparency and good governance
  • Work with a new Board and a collegiate executive team
  • Prepare and strengthen an iconic NSW organisation for the future

The organisation

RSL NSW is a not-for-profit organisation with a 100 year history of supporting veterans and their families by connecting them to services to improve their wellbeing, and connecting them to their local community, through camaraderie, mateship, recreation, and commemorating service.

The organisation has over 26,000 members in 312 sub-Branches and chapters throughout New South Wales and is incorporated under an NSW Act of Parliament.

The RSL NSW team – the Board, the members, and staff – is focussed on their mission of improving services for veterans and their families.

The RSL NSW head office is based in the heart of the Sydney CBD.  The organisation is well into its 2021-26 Strategic Plan, and key milestones have already been  achieved. Transparency is a key element of the organisation’s approach; a detailed implementation dashboard, a task update – and the Strategy itself – can be found on the RSL NSW website.

The role

The CEO reports to the RSL NSW Board, and provides leadership, vision, and direction for the organisation, and focus on the delivery of the organisation’s Strategic Plan 2021-2026.

RSL NSW is looking for a senior executive who brings experience in leading an organisation that has undergone significant change, with a demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategy, manage risk, create a vision, and bring people along a change journey. Commercial acumen as well as strong communication skills are imperative to this role.

This role is best suited to an individual who is able to deliver the organisation’s message and engage with a broad range of stakeholders both within and outside the organisation. Outstanding people skills and ability to negotiate complexity is vital.

Experience leading a membership and/or volunteer-based organisation would be looked upon favourably, as would an understanding of the defence force or RSL NSW culture. Similarly, experience in the for-purpose (NFP) environment with a sound understanding of funding and revenue streams, as well as working with volunteers, would be an advantage.

Please note RSL NSW and its sub-Branches do not own or operate any registered clubs, nor do they own or operate poker machines. RSL NSW and its sub-Branches are a registered charity, whereas RSL Clubs are not. RSL Clubs are typically not-for-profit entities that operate licensed premises and are governed by different legislation than for charities, and different legislation from RSL NSW.
