Many organisations supplement their income with fundraising activities. Sausage sizzles are popular because they are easy to hold and generate a good return on the day. But for one club, the sausage sizzle hit a major snag.
As part of a fundraising event, a club had a sausage sizzle to raise money to pay for their new website. In preparation for the sausage sizzle, the club purchased 200 kilos of sausages, 50 kilos of minced meat patties and 20 kilos of chicken breast.
On the day of the event, a couple of the club’s volunteers called in sick. In a dash of desperation, the club’s president called a couple of his friends to help out with cooking the BBQ. None of the friends had undergone any induction program or had undertaken any food safety courses prior to the event.
During the preparation, one of the volunteers placed cooked meat into an empty tray which had been used to store raw chicken breast. The empty tray contained a pool of fluid that had come from the chicken breast. The cooked meat was served to members of the public.
The next day, the club’s president received complaints from approximately 100 members of the public who said they had food poisoning. Those affected had symptoms which ranged from nausea and vomiting to a more serious case where one attendee was admitted to hospital with severe salmonella poisoning.
The outcome:
This person made a claim against the club for negligent handling of food. He had been unable to return to work for over 2 months due to the infection. This individual incurred out of pocket expenses and loss of income of 2 weeks wages from his work. The individual was a partner of a large accounting firm.
The club’s insurer paid $50,000 in compensation which included loss of earnings and out of pocket expenses.
