When Lily Fardell died at the age of 96 she left her valuable house and all its contents to the St Vincent de Paul Society.
The house was sold at auction for $2.35 million and on Sunday her vast collection of antiques was auctioned off for more than $100,000.
When her share portfolio is sold Fardell will have left round $4 million to charity.
Vinnies Newcastle Executive Officer, Denise Lucas, thanked Fardell for her final act of charity.
“We are deeply grateful for the incredible generosity of the late Lily Fardell. Social Justice is at the very core of what the St Vincent de Paul Society stands for and, as was close to Mrs Fardell’s heart, there is no greater cause than ensuring that men, women and especially children experiencing homelessness receive the support they need,” Lucas said.
“Through her bequest Mrs Fardell has ensured that we can continue to assist people experiencing disadvantage in the Newcastle area for years to come.”
Fardell did not have any children and she and her husband Noel had lived in their house in the expensive suburb, The Hill, since 1958.
