Funders working together to solve the world's water crisis, known as WASHfunders.org, is a global initiative that has been recognised as one of 10 top innovators in a recent report on global philanthropy.
The report, 10 innovations in global philanthropy, was published by UK-based New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) and highlights innovations as concepts worth spreading to maximise social impact.
Washfunders says access to safe water is one of the most crucial issues of our time.
Worldwide, nearly 780 million people do not have reliable access to clean water, and a staggering 2.5 billion, including nearly one billion children, do not have adequate sanitation.
“Philanthropy can play a critical role in helping to change these dire statistics,” the Not for Profit said.
With seed funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and additional support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Foundation Center has developed WASHfunders.org as a “one stop shop” for funding and needs-related data and information for donors, policymakers, and other stakeholders interested in water, sanitation, and hygiene.
WASHfunders.org says it aims to facilitate better collaboration and more strategic decision-making among funders and seeks to raise awareness about water and the full WASH continuum among donors using dynamically updated information, news, and knowledge relating to philanthropy and sustainable access to safe water.
NPC says it used the world’s leading philanthropy experts to identify and select the top ten ground-breaking approaches which have the potential to make the biggest impact on how philanthropy works.
“We selected initiatives that we believe will really make a difference to the sector—rather than those that are fun and interesting but less transformative,” NPC said.
“The innovations have emerged from across the world: they are drawn from countries where philanthropy is already developed, such as the US and Canada and Australia, as well as those where it is at a different stage, such as India.
Pro Bono Australia News has already featured the landmark Not for Profit GoodStart initiative facilitated by Social Ventures Australia to run more than 600 child care centres around Australia which has been recognised as one of 10 top innovations by NPC.
In 2009 678 ABC Learning centres were purchased from receivers by the GoodStart consortium, a Not for Profit company established by Mission Australia, Social Ventures Australia, the Benevolent Society and the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
