New Book Shines Light on Homelessness

The creators of a new book exploring homelessness in Australia claim it will re-define how society thinks about what is often an overlooked issue.
The book, Homelessness in Australia: An introduction, was edited by Chris Chamberlain, Guy Johnson and Catherine Robinson and launched by the Federal Minister for Social Services Kevin Andrews and Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Jan McLucas at a National Conference for Homelessness in the Gold Coast earlier this month.
The Council to Homeless Persons (CHP), who instigated the development of the book, said that the text is the first of its kind in providing an introduction to homelessness.
“This is the first book to provide an introduction to the complex causes and responses to homelessness in Australia.” CEO of CHP Jenny Smith said.
“For those new to the homelessness sector or looking to understand the field, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to an issue that’s often overlooked and misunderstood.
“It is sure to become a mainstay on the shelves of both seasoned workers and a go-to for those new to the homelessness sector.”
Twenty-one independent authors have contributed to the book in areas across research, policy and academia. The book’s chapters cover issues such as gender, indigenous homelessness, family violence, young people, older people, the effects of trauma and reforming the services system.
