Humanitarian Not for Profit, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) has been chosen as the exclusive charity partner for City of Sydney’s New Year celebrations – putting EWB up in lights on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“This is an exciting opportunity for us to celebrate the role of engineering and technology in creating a better world,” EWB CEO Lizzie Brown said.
Previous charity partners include the Fred Hollows Foundation and Care Australia.
“This year marks EWB’s 10-year anniversary. It is also the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House, one of the great engineering icons of our nation,” Brown said.
“As we watch fireworks being launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, we will reflect on the importance of engineering in addressing the world’s greatest problems.
“This event will showcase EWB’s work to our largest audience ever. It means sharing our message with one billion people around the globe – that’s how many people are watching Sydney’s pyrotechnics spectacular – let’s get them excited about the impact engineering can have for communities.”
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City was proud to celebrate EWB's first 10 years and support its life-changing efforts over the next decade.
On NYE EWB will have live pop-up sites on New Year's Eve around Sydney displaying appropriate technologies including a giant toilet and Lego wind turbine.
EWB’s brand and messages about humanitarian engineering will be displayed throughout the night on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The City of Melbourne has not chosen a charity to support as part of it’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
However a spokesperson for the Council says that while there is no “official” charity for NYE it will work with the Salvation Army who help activate chill out zones at official live sites.
