New Chair for Responsible Gambling Council

The Victorian Government says the appointment of lawyer and business leader John Walter as the new Chair of the Responsible Gambling Ministerial Advisory Council will regenerate the body.  

The Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation Edward O’Donohue last week announced Walter’s appointment for the next three years.

“The Responsible Gambling Ministerial Advisory Council was established to provide advice to the Victorian Government on responsible gambling policy and gambling research,” O’Donohue said.

“The Coalition Government is committed to re-establishing the Council with broadened community input.

O’Donohue said Walter’s appointment gives the Coalition Government an opportunity to revitalise the Council with a distinguished lawyer and business leader at the helm.

“Mr Walter will help re-establish the Council as a forum for key members of the gambling industry and the community to provide advice to government on responsible gambling. Its input will complement significant reforms delivered by the Coalition Government in establishing the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation and the Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation.”

Walter is currently a Partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth and is a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council Committee, providing advice to senior officials and Ministers in the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Forum.

His experience on major projects includes Melbourne Citylink, Eastlink, Airport Link in Brisbane, Melbourne Convention Centre, Victorian schools, South Australia Desalination, the Melbourne Markets Relocation and the restructure of the Ararat Prison Project.

Former Chair of the Council, Professor Bruce Singh is now inaugural Chair of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.

“I am confident that Mr Singh and Mr Walter will ensure that the Council and the Foundation work together effectively in their different but complementary roles,” O’Donohue said.
