Cap on Self-Education Expenses Delayed
7 August 2013 at 10:09 am

The Federal Government will defer the introduction of the $2,000 self-education cap until 1 July 2015.

The announcement was made by Treasurer Chris Bowen as part of the Government's Economic Statement released on August 2nd.

"This will allow for further consultation on how best to target excessive claims while ensuring the impact on university enrolments and genuine continuing professional development is minimised," the statement said.

“This measure is expected to decrease receipts by $250 million over the forward estimates period.”

The Fundraising Institute of Australia says it lobbied the Federal Government to ‘scrap the cap’ on behalf of the sector since it was first announced in April.

“FIA has written to both the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer outlining the impact the cap would have for fundraisers, has encouraged members to support the #scrapthecap campaign and is also supporting the Services Round Table, the peak body for the Australian services industries, in a political campaign being run around this issue in the lead up to the election,” FIA Chief Executive Officer, Rob Edwards said.

“FIA is pleased to see the work done by itself and other peak bodies has affected the deferral. We will continue to work with other key groups to abolish the cap.

The Federal Government had expected to save $514.3 million over the next four years by capping annual tax deductions for self-education expenses at $2000.
