The NSW National Disability Service is calling for nominations for individuals and organisation with an innovative idea that has changed the way disability services and supports are delivered.

The NSW Disability Innovation Awards acknowledge outstanding achievements made by non-government organisations, community based organisations and individuals working in the industry.

NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance said the awards celebrated individuals and organisations who worked tirelessly to transform the way services and supports are delivered.

“This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the kind of expertise and quality of ideas which enable choice and give more control to people with disability,” he said.

“Now more than ever, innovation and new ideas will be the driving force in ensuring a successful rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).”

Nominations are open for volunteers, private workers and self nominations.

Categories for nomination include innovation in independent living, leadership in promoting community engagement and employment opportunities, and excellence in the use of technology.

People with disability, carers and families will also be able to vote in the people’s choice category which will be judged for its strong commitment to person-centred practices.

This is the second year for the awards.

Community Connections Australia was one of last year’s winners gaining credit for its web-based android application, Jeenee, offering 24-hour assistance for people with a disability on their phone.

Nominations close at 5pm on Friday, May 31.

The Innovation Awards ceremony will be held in Sydney in September 2013.
