National depression Not for Profit, beyondblue has announced its board member, Natasha Stott Despoja, has been elevated to the position of Deputy Chair.

Stott Despoja joined the board in 2008 after a successful career in federal politics, which started when she became the youngest female ever to enter Federal Parliament at 26.

The Deputy Chair position was vacated last year by Kate Carnell AO when she stepped down to become beyondblue’s chief executive.

Stott Despoja, who joins Western Australian Under Treasurer Tim Marney as the other Deputy Chair, said she was delighted by the appointment.

"Since joining the Board nearly five years ago, I have been immensely proud of the work done by beyondblue," she said.

"This appointment is an honour and reflects my deep commitment to raising awareness about depression and anxiety and reducing the associated stigma.

"It will also allow me to better pursue issues that I’m particularly interested in such as those affecting women and gay, lesbian, bi, trans and intersex (GLBTI) people, and the rollout of beyondblue’s successful KidsMatter framework.”

Beyondblue Chairman Jeff Kennett said he respected the work that Stott Despoja had done as a board member.

"She has done a tremendous job of using her extensive network throughout the community to help us deliver beyondblue’s messages," he said.

"With Tim as the other Deputy Chair, Kate as the CEO and a Board comprising very committed medical professionals and lay people, beyondblue is ideally placed to continue its vital work."
