New Leadership for Diabetes Not for Profit
1 March 2013 at 2:26 pm

National diabetes peak body, Diabetes Australia, has announced Professor Greg Johnson as its new Chief Executive.

Professor Johnson is a well-respected leader in the health sector with over 30 years’ experience. He has previously had various CEO and Board level roles in hospitals and health services and has worked in most states and territories of Australia.

He was previously the Chief Executive of Diabetes Australia – Victoria which he commenced in January 2003 and spent 10 years in the role.

Professor Johnson is also an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University; Board Chair of Physical Activity Australia; Chair of the Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance; and a member of the federal Ministerial Diabetes Advisory Group.

Meanwhile, Diabetes Australia – Victoria has appointed Craig Bennett in the role of CEO vacated by Professor Johnson.

Bennett, who is a qualified health economist, was formerly the Chief Executive of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for eight and a half years.

Prior to this, Bennett was the chief of public hospitals in Western Australia, South Australia and the UK.

Diabetes Australia – Victoria says that Bennett has a well-established track record of successfully negotiating with senior State and Commonwealth bureaucrats on both complex health capital projects and issues of public health policy.

He was a leading contributor to the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Project at Parkville in Melbourne and led the development of a number of research and service provision collaborations with a range of key stakeholders.

Bennett says that there are many similarities between his recent leadership of Australia’s pre-eminent cancer centre and what he can offer to Diabetes Australia – Vic.

“I am looking forward to implementing the strategic vision and objectives of Diabetes Australia – Vic and, in so doing, working to reduce the impact of diabetes in the Victorian community,” he said.

Bennett will commence his role on March 4.
