An Australian-developed Not for Profit app has been downloaded by more than a quarter of a million people worldwide, with requests to make it available in more languages.
Alzheimer’s Australia’s BrainyApp, developed in partnership with Bupa Health Foundation, hit 250,447 downloads this week, averaging about 200 per day.
Said to be the world’s first dementia risk reduction app, BrainyApp hit number one in the Australian App Store when it launched in November 2011, with 41,000 downloads in 48 hours.

Alzheimer’s Australia research Fellow, Dr Maree Farrow, said that these figures demonstrate that Australians and people worldwide are eager for information and strategies to help them improve their brain health.
Dr Farrow said there had been enquiries from around the world wanting to know when the web and translated versions will be available.
“People from The Netherlands, South Africa, Mexico and even Iceland have approached us requesting versions more accessible in their languages,” she said.
BrainyApp, which Alzheimer’s Australia says may help people reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, was honoured with two awards in November 2012 – the Victorian Public Health Care Award for Innovation and Technology and the Public Relations Institute Golden Target Award for Consumer Marketing.
According to Alzheimer’s Australia, there are currently 320,000 Australians living with dementia, which is expected to soar to almost 900,000 by 2050.
“There is no cure for dementia, which means that we need to give priority to initiatives such as BrainyApp that raise awareness of dementia, and help people to understand and reduce their risk of developing the condition,” Dr Farrow said.
BrainyApp is now available as a free download for Android phones and tablets from the Google Play Store. iPhone, iPod and iPad users can still download BrainyApp from the App Store.
