A ‘hot pink’ publication has been launched by The Victorian Women's Trust which it describes as tackling the long standing quest for gender equality and an attempt to restore respect to Australian politics.
Called A Switch in Time, VWT Executive Director and author, Mary Crooks says the publication “is our call to action in our long standing quest for gender equality, our interest in strengthening our democracy and our commitment to care for the earth”.
“A Switch in Time (with a distinctive hot pink cover) pulls all the main threads of the debate about sexism together for the first time. It demonstrates the unprecedented levels of attacks against the Prime Minister; the relentless references to how she came to power; the questioning of her authority in leading a minority government; and the free-wheeling abuse permeating traditional and new media.
“It then makes the critical connection to how these attacks denigrate our democratic processes, including the dumbing-down of policy debates, such as the efforts of climate science deniers and oppositional forces to discredit climate science and the carbon price package,” Crooks said.
“Importantly, the last section of the publication identifies a series of actions that women and men can take that will help restore some respect to our national politics and political discourse more generally.
“Our country has become mired in discordant voices of fury, sexism, hatred and disrespect – and many Australians are deeply uneasy. They know and understand intuitively that a destructive and violent political discourse squeezes out the possibilities of rational and civil disagreement. They recognise that strong traditions of respect, tolerance, fairness and democracy are under pressure.”
A Switch in Time is available in hard copy free of charge. The only cost is postage and handling.
