Bucket Run To Highlight World Water Issues

Fundraising Fun Runs across Australia are not new but two Melbourne engineers will compete in this years Run Melbourne event each carrying a bucket of water to raise funds for the Not for Profit Engineers Without Borders.

Perry Jackson, a Geotechnical Engineer for Arup and Dan A’Vard, a Senior Environmental Consultant at Sustainable Resource Use will run the 10km fundraiser event to represent the estimated 1.1 billion people who live more than a kilometre from their water source, according to the UN Human Development Report.

“This is not a hard problem to solve, provided people know about it and are willing to do something to change the situation,” A’Vard said.

Most of these 1.1 billion people use just five litres of water a day; the equivalent of half your average household bucket, or less than one toilet flush.

"Trying to run 10 kilometres with five litres of water in a bucket is pretty stupid – but I think it'll show very quickly just how hard it is to fetch your own water," Perry said.

Engineers Without Borders is a Not for Profit organisation that works with disadvantaged communities through the implementation of sustainable engineering projects.

All money raised will support EWB’s work with communities in Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and East Timor; assisting them to access safe drinking water and sanitation.
