Federal Government to Update NFP Stats

The Gillard Government has invested $1.7 million in an effort to better understand the economic and social contribution made by Australian Not for Profit organisations.
The Minister for Social Inclusion Mark Butler and the Minister for Community Services Julie Collins have announced the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will update its statistics on the size, value, and economic importance of the Not for Profit Sector.
The new ABS-led work “will provide updated and reliable data about just how significant this sector really is,” according a joint release by Butler and Collins.
“The Government is undertaking the most significant reform agenda for the NFP sector in Australia’s history and the satellite account will support this process."
An 'ABS satellite account' is understood to mean the reporting of statistics that are not part of an ongoing ABS program, according to a government spokesperson.
"On the best presently available data, we understand that the sector consists of around 600,000 organisations, with nearly 60,000 of these considered economically significant,” according to the Ministers’ release.
Collins said the latest available figures date back to 2006-07.
The ABS’s ‘data collection year’ for the updated statistics will be 2012-13 financial year.
