Unions “Jumping For Joy” Over Equal Pay Decision

Unionists say they are ‘jumping for joy” over the landmark equal pay decision by Fair Work Australia.

Linda White, from the Australian Services Union, tweeted her response soon after the pay decision, which gives workers between 19% and 41% pay rises, was handed down by the wages tribunal Fair Work Australia.

White said they are "jumping for joy. … it’s a brilliant result that will change many lives".

In another tweet she says: "great day to be an ASU member ….dare to struggle dare to win".

The ASU’s Assistance Branch Secretary in Victoria, Lisa Darmanin, says while the union is extremely happy with the decision it is disappointed with the 8 year phase in for the anticipated pay rises.

“It’s a long time for workers to wait given that the the decision has already been made that the equal pay rises are appropriate.”

The judgement says the 8 year phase in is based on submissions from State Governments saying they could not commit to the full additional funds.

“The Victorian Government can afford to deliver equal pay and Premier Ted Baillieu has a lot to answer for,” Darmanin said.

“Now is the time for community sector employers and all State and Territory Governments to support the decision,” said Darmanin.
