Sian Harrick, President of Students Teaching English our World (STEW), is profiled in Changemakers, a regular column which examines inspiring people and their careers in the Not for Profit sector.
Students Teaching English our World (STEW) is a Monash University club that envisions to empower refugee and migrant adults, providing free English tuition in their homes. STEW connects university students with their community and places a strong emphasis on education opportunities for women.
Sian is studying a Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Arts at Monash and working part time catering at a nursing home and as a carer, as well as doing some tutoring on the side. Sian joined STEW when she started uni in 2008 and have been on the committee since 2009. She is passionate about teaching English and helping newcomers to Australia settle in and feel connected to the community.

What is the best thing about working in the Not for Profit sector?
Nothing is done grudgingly. Somehow doing something for free feels so much better than doing the same thing and being underpaid!
