It’s called Philanthropy In/Sight – a Data Visualization Platform for Global Philanthropy – and it’s an online tool that allows you to visualise the impact of grantmaking around the world or in a community.
Philanthropy In/Sight is an interactive mapping tool designed for grantmakers, policymakers, researchers, academics—virtually anyone interested in the impact of philanthropy around the world.
It combines the Foundation Center’s data on grantmakers and their grants with familiar Google maps to tell the story of philanthropy.
Choosing from a wide range of customisation options, users can quickly create maps that reveal patterns of giving and funding relationships.
Philanthropy In/Sight consists of two unique mapping tools: a Grantmaker Map and a Grant Map.
The Grantmaker Map is fed by the Foundation Center’s database of information on over 98,000 U.S. foundations and grantmaking public charities and a growing number of non-U.S. grantmakers; the Grant Map is fed by the Foundation Center’s database of details on more than 1.9 million grants awarded around the world by approximately 22,000 U.S. grantmakers and a growing number of non-U.S. grantmakers to over 169,000 recipients.
The grantmaker and grant data in Philanthropy In/Sight is compiled from IRS information returns, grantmaker web sites, annual reports, printed application guidelines, the philanthropic press, and various other sources. In all, the Foundation Center’s staff continually monitors more than 35 diverse information sources to verify the details in the databases.
