A new giving survey finds that Australians don't always think of making a donation to charity at Christmas

 That’s not to say Australians don’t give at all – the Give Differently(1) survey reveals a whopping 92 per cent of adult respondents claim to have given to charity in the last 12 months.

However, the results indicate the majority of these donations were made as a knee-jerk reaction to national disasters such as the Victorian Bushfire appeal, with only 33 per cent of donations taking place over the Christmas period.

The Give Differently survey was conducted by Galaxy research on behalf od Westpac Community Markets on the weekend of 20-22 November 2009. The sample was 1100 respondents aged 16 years and older distributed throughout Australia. 

The survey says that it’s not that Australian aren’t charitable – 95 percent claim to have made a charitable donation in the past two years with one in four saying that they have donated more than $500 in the last two years.

The survey found that the majority of Australian donations were made as a knee-jerk reaction to national disasters with over half (58%) donating to the Victorian bushfire appeal while another 16 percent donated to the Queensland floods.

In NSW – 56 percent donated to the Victorian bushfire appeal and 12 percent to the Queensland floods
In VIC   – 70 percent donated to the Victorian bushfire appeal and 14 percent to the Queensland floods
In QLD  – 49 percent donated to the Victorian bushfire appeal and 26 percent to the Queensland floods
