Pro Bono Law Conference -an Australian first!

The Federal Attorney General, Daryl Williams is to host the first national Pro Bono Law Conference; ‘For the Public Good’ in Canberra later this week (Aug 4,5,6).
The Attorney General says the aim of the Conference is to honour and promote the valuable work done by all sections of the legal profession in the public interest and to encourage further development in the field.
The conference brings together some of Australia’s leading figures from the judiciary, legal firms, academia and legal aid.
The Conference will examine best practice, what obstacles there may be to extending pro bono work, and what might be done in the areas of research and coordination.
The Chair of National Legal Aid. Chris Staniford says we have been too slow to recognise the enormous contribution lawyers make to our community.
He says so many do so much for free, unannounced and unacknowledged.
From the community organisation’s board of management, to deserving cases and appearances in the High Court, you can always find lawyers offering their services for free.
