Weather Alert - The Perfect Storm Foundation

Here’s another example of a famous author who was so taken by his work that he formed a Foundation to try to help others – and found the going rough!

While writing his international best seller, The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger developed a tremendous respect for the fishermen of Gloucester, in Massachusetts USA. The book was a great success and the recent release of the movie has also been a box office hit. With all this, Junger wanted to help the children of the fisherman he wrote about.

He set up the Perfect Storm Foundation to provide educational and cultural opportunities for young people whose parents make their living in the commercial fishing industry and in working maritime communities.

Warner Bros Studios kicked in $25,000 along with Junger’s initial establishment funds. In two years it has received more than $250, 000 and distributed $20,000 in grants. Not bad…but just as a comparison, the movie cost $130 million to make and has already grossed $160 million at the box office.

The challenge now is to keep the Foundation’s momentum going after the storm phenomenon has passed!
