Free Help with Tax Returns
28 August 2000 at 12:08 pm

And still on the issue of tax….if any of your clients need help doing their tax return this year, the Tax Office-trained community volunteers are now available across the country.

‘Tax Help’ is a free community service for people on low incomes who need help with their tax return, including the aged, people from non-English speaking backgrounds, or people with disabilities.

Tax Help volunteers explain your tax obligations and help you to complete your tax return. The emphasis is on self-help so that people can learn to do their own return in following years.

The program began in 1988 with just 70 volunteers and 1000 clients. Since then it has expanded to help more than 360,000 people.

The volunteers are trained by the Tax Office to help people with income from Australian and overseas pensions, salary, wages, interest, dividends and government allowances and benefits. But some other types of income are not covered by Tax Help, such as capital gains and rent.

To find out where the nearest Tax Help centre is or for more information call 13 2861
