Mapping Philanthropy

Researcher Anthony Hooper from Deakin University in Victoria has begun a project to identify and map the nature of philanthropy in Australia.
In a joint project with Philanthropy Australia, Hooper says he will look at the styles and forms of grant-making by discretionary Trusts and Foundations.
Hooper has a sociology background and describes himself as being relatively new to philanthropy, so he has spent the past twelve months immersing himself in the issues and the mechanics of the sector.
He says there is a lack of detailed research in Australia on the operating principles and rationales of grant-making compared to other countries such as the United States.
The research will look at just what these Trusts and Foundations are funding and whether they use mainstream approaches or more innovative and cutting edge approaches. This will include looking at strategic funding, and the flow-on effect of the introduction of trendy words such as partnerships.
Anthony Hooper is now preparing for the pilot testing of his questionnaire and the project completion date is March 2002.
