Opportunity International Talks Micro Economy
25 June 2001 at 1:06 pm
Opportunity International Australia is a Not for Profit pioneer of micro-enterprise development (MED) services so it is fitting that the keynote speaker at a special presentation in August on Globalisation and the Poverty Challenge is the President of the World Bank James Wolfensohn.
MED services aim to attack the root causes of poverty by providing small loans typically $50 to $500 to the poorest of the world’s poor to set up a small (micro) business and create permanent jobs.
These new entrepreneurs receive business training and mentoring but pay back the loans with interest, after which many qualify for further expansion loans.
James Wolfensohn is on their wavelength having led the World Bank towards global poverty reduction through comprehensive reform programs.
Last Year Opportunity International says it created over a quarter of a million jobs, breaking the poverty cycle for more than one million people.
Joining James Wolfensohn at the presentation in Sydney will be Bruce Davis, the Director General of AusAID and Charles B Goode, the Chairman of ANZ Banking Group.
The special dinner and presentation will take place on Wednesday August 1 at the ANA Hotel Sydney, Grand Ballroom, The Rocks, Sydney.
Reservations are required by July 20th. For a registration form or more information contact (02) 8259 0404 and quote Pro Bono Australia or visit the web site at www.opportunity.org.au.
