National Young Lawyer Awards for Community Work
20 August 2001 at 1:08 pm

The Australian Young Lawyers Committee of the Law Council of Australia is looking for nominations for this year’s 2001 Young Lawyer Awards.

And going on past winners there is some tough competition out there in the category of programs to assist and benefit the community.

In recent years winners have included John McCarthy, a young lawyer from Nambucca Heads, in NSW, who won an award for his voluntary work in assisting a community group to successfully oppose a development at Scotts Heads on environmental grounds.

Another award went to a “Young Offenders Advice Project” to provide eligible participants in NSW with free legal advice and obtained funding for a telephone advice line manned by volunteer Young Lawyers.

As well a Darwin solicitor, Jenny Hardy, won an award for establishing the Darwin Community Legal Service.

The objectives of the awards are to encourage young lawyers, associations and individuals around the country to establish programs for the benefit of the profession and the community.

Nominations close at 5.00pm EST on Friday 14th September. Application forms and rules governing the awards are available by contacting Gerard O’Neill at the Law Council of Australia on (02) 6247 3788 or e-mail to gerard.oneill@lawcouncil.asn.au .
