From Philanthropy to Social Investment

Swinburne University of Technology is hosting a high-powered seminar in Melbourne later this month as part of its launch of the Asia Pacific Centre for Philanthropy and Social Investment.
The establishment of the Centre by Swinburne University in 2001 reflects the growing interest worldwide and in Australia in philanthropy and social investment according to the founding director Michael Liffman, and the former CEO of the Myer Foundation and the Sidney Myer Fund.
The Centre will undertake professional education and research in grant making and philanthropy at postgraduate level, and will also offer consultancy services.
It will be one of few bodies in the world to offer specialised skills development in grant making.
Michael Liffman says that a time when families, individuals and corporations are exploring new possibilities for philanthropy, the Centre will be of great interest to a wide range of people:
„h Public affairs, marketing and sponsorship managers in corporations
„h Professionals, including solicitors, accountants and investment advisers
„h Fund managers and trustees
„h Commercial entrepreneurs and investors
„h Foundation personnel, community workers, social planners and public servants.
Programs will also be offered to people planning careers in these fields as well as to individuals who are considering making gifts to the community.
The centre will be launched by Lady Southey AM, President of the Myer Foundation and Heloise Waislitz, the Chair of the Pratt Foundation after the Seminar titled ¡§From Philanthropy to Social Investment¡¨ on Wednesday 21st of November.
The Seminar will cover topics such as obligations of business to the community; family philanthropy, corporate philanthropy, social investment and marketing and philanthropic decision-making.
The Seminar boasts an impressive line up of guest speakers including Ron Clarke (CEPA) Dahle Suggett (Allan Consulting), Jane Tewson (Pilot Light), Marion Webster and Helen Imber (Melbourne Community Foundation) Melinda Buckland (community programs, BHP Billiton), Jan Cochrane-Harry (Perpetual Trustees) and many more¡K.
The moderators will be Michael Liffman, Ulrike Schuermann, the former CEO of the Australian Youth Foundation, Geraldine Skinner from the PM¡¦s Community Business Partnership and Denis Tracey, the author of ¡§Family Business, the Volatile Mix of Love, Power and Money¡¨.
The Seminar will be held at the Melbourne offices of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.
