Controlling the .ORG Domain
4 February 2003 at 12:02 pm
A new, Not for Profit corporation called the Public Interest Registry (PIR) has been created to manage the .ORG domain on the Internet with the aim to educate and empower the community sector.
PIR was established by the Internet Society (ISOC) to support the continuing use of the Internet as a research, education and communication infrastructure.
The PIR assumed responsibility for the .ORG domain on January 1st, 2003 and one of its first tasks has been to set up an international Advisory Council.
The Advisory Council will address the needs, concerns and views of the Not for Profit Internet community as well as to advise the PIR management team on issues that are unique to the sector.
PIR says the issues may range from policy matters to the introduction of new services. The Advisory Council will also serve as an ombudsman-type resource for management around decision making.
Council membership will consist of leaders from a wide cross section of the Not for Profit sector including educational, artistic, cultural, human rights, political, religious and scientific sectors.
At least two members will be chosen from each of the six regions of Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and Latin America.
Council members are expected to be announced in March. For further information on PIR’s .ORG Advisory Council, including its charter and Bylaws check out the web site at www.pir.org.
