Pratt Encourages Cultural Philanthropy

The chairman of Visy Industries and founder of the Pratt Foundation, Richard Pratt has called for more vigorous promotion of the arts saying it’s all in the marketing!
Billionaire businessman Richard Pratt is supporting a new award for leadership in cultural philanthropy, called the Artsupport Australia Philanthropy Leadership Award, as part of the recently announced 2004 AbaF Awards.
Pratt says many people are oblivious to the exciting and varied events going on in the Australian arts scene and more dynamic marketing is needed to bolster the cause.
AbaF says Artsupport Australia’s role is to facilitate increased levels of giving to Australia’s cultural life, and this new Award recognises leadership in encouraging more giving to the arts.
The new philanthropy award brings to a total of thirteen the awards that will be presented at the 2004 AbaF Awards.
Winsome McCaughey, Executive Director of AbaF, says that this year’s AbaF Awards reflect the growing range of AbaF services being offered to the arts, business and donors. AbaF is now working across three service areas: Partnerships, Volunteering, and Philanthropy, and there are Awards in all three areas.
The Partnership Awards honour business arts partnerships large and small, city and country, that are contributing to sustainable communities and fostering cultural life.
The Volunteering Award is the KPMG adviceBank Award, which honours a business volunteer who has provided a vital contribution to an arts organisation.
The Philanthropy Award is the Artsupport Australia Philanthropy Leadership Award, which will honour an individual, family, group or foundation that has made an exceptional contribution to cultural philanthropy.
Richard Pratt was joined at the Call for Nominations by philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch; James Strong, Chairman of AbaF; and Nigel Milan, Managing Director of SBS, AbaF Councillor, and the host of the Call for Nominations function.
Nominations for the 2004 AbaF Awards close on 24 May. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.abaf.org.au
Finalists will be announced in July and the Awards will be presented in Melbourne on 29 July.

AbaF Business Arts Partnership of the Year,
chosen from among the following business arts partnership awards:
– Bytecraft Commitment Award – for long-term partnerships
– QantasLink Regional Award – for partnerships outside metropolitan areas
– Community Award – for partnerships that enhance the community
– Sensis Small Business Award – for partnerships involving businesses employing up to 80 people
– Australia Council Media Arts Award – for partnerships that promote the arts through the media
– City of Melbourne Open Award
The following two partnership awards do not compete for Partnership of the Year
– Caliburn Corporate Strategy Award – for companies with a strategic approach to their arts partnership portfolio
– Scotchmans Hill Encouragement Award- for a business involved in its first partnership
