Developing Your Organisation - Update Guide

An updated version of the successful Queensland Government publication “Developing Your Organisation” has been launched with the assistance of the Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at Queensland University of Technology.
The DYO resource will assist community organisations to meet their governance, organisational and service delivery responsibilities.
CPNS says the publication has been fully revised with the addition of new sections on volunteering, insurance, risk management, strategic planning and managing service agreements.
Queensland’s Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors Warren Pitt launched the updated guide.
The authors are:
Steve Bennett – a partner in the Industrial Relations and Employment Law group at Blake Dawson Waldron and Asher Lindsay a solicitor in that group. Blake Dawson Waldron provides expert legal assistance in a range of areas including industrial relations, employment and discrimination law to a number of large Not for Profit organisations including Lifeline, Blue Care, Uniting HealthCare, Endeavour Foundation, Mater Health Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Steve and Asher revised Chapter 4 – Employing People.
Jeff Cheverton – the Executive Director of the Queensland Alliance, the community sector peak body on mental health and psychiatric disability in Queensland. Jeff has worked in human services for 15 years, and has played a role with consumer-managed organisations such as the Queensland Public Tenants Association and Queensland Disability Housing Coalition and he is a Board member of Queensland Council of Social. Jeff contributed to Chapter 8 – Consumer Participation.
Mark Creighton – Manager of Education and Research at Volunteering Queensland. He has over fifteen years experience as an educator and consultant working with a range of voluntary and non-profit organisations and groups. Mark specialises in the areas of non-profit and community leadership, community participation and personal and organisation wellness. He has worked with over 5,000 community and non-profit projects over the past five years. Mark contributed to Chapter 5 – Volunteers.
Ruth Knight is based on the Gold Coast and is manger and consultant in the Not for Profit sector, working with organisations that provide young people with information, education and housing services. Ruth is dedicated to helping organisations improve their performance and make a real difference in their community. Ruth contributed to Chapter 6 – Organisational Performance.
Diane Morgan is CEO of Volunteering Queensland and has over 35 years experience working with community organisations and volunteers as a volunteer manager, board member, educator, counsellor and volunteer herself. She has a social welfare and counselling background and a Graduate Diploma in Human Service (QUT). Diane contributed to Chapter 5 – Volunteers
Margi O’Connell Hood has been an active participant in the development of the social service sector in Queensland for over twenty-five years. She has worked as a volunteer, Director, Executive Officer, consultant and trainer in a wide range of service areas including women’s health, employment, enterprise creation, community development and housing. She is currently completing her Masters Degree in Philanthropic and Nonprofit Management at QUT. Margi contributed to Chapter 1 – Starting a Community Organisation and Chapter 9 – Culturally Inclusive Service Delivery.
Paul Paxton-Hall is a partner in the Corporate and Commercial business unit of Deacons (Brisbane) and heads the national not for profit focus group. Paul acts for a wide range of not for profit organisations including schools, charitable organisations, sporting bodies, professional associations, churches and hospitals. Paul contributed to Chapter 2 – Management Committee
Matthew Turnour – the Managing Partner of Neumann & Turnour Lawyers. Matthew has a keen interest in the NFP sector and acts for a number of churches, charitable organisations and associations. He is presently working on a PhD about the laws of the NFP sector. Matthew contributed to Chapter 7 – When Things Go Wrong.
Myles McGregor-Lowndes is Director of the Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies and revised the remaining chapters and performed the role of editor.
