The Victorian Minister for Community Services, Gavin Jennings will launch a "Carer focused forum" in Melbourne to address all aspects of carer needs on Saturday May 26, 2007.

The Support Forum – For People Who Care is being hosted by Not for Profit organisation Can-Survive along with other organisations involved in carer issues.

This one-day program will provide carers with information, resources and
practical skills to find balance amid the day-to-day pressures of being a
carer for a family member or loved one.

Joel Nathan, Founder & Executive Chairman of Can-Survive says the Forum will be led by a number of key experts in the field.

The Forum’s program includes topics such as: "Respite Is not a dirty word", health promotion for carers and putting yourself first, as well as "Carers get depression too".

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates there are 2.6 million carers in Australia who provide some assistance to those who need help because of disability or age. About one fifth of these (19%) are primary carers. Of those providing care, 1.0 million (39%) are in the 35-54 year age range.
This age group’s caring responsibilities involved children, partners and/or ageing parents.

Can-Survive was founded in December 2000 by Joel Nathan, an author, psychotherapist and 24-year cancer survivor. The organisation’s aim is to relieve the emotional and spiritual distress and suffering of people facing a life threatening disease.

Event: Support Forum – For People Who Care
Date: Saturday May 26, 2007
Venue: RACV Club, Level 17, 501 Bourke Street
Time: 0900
