FIA Conference - Awards

The Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA) announced the winners of its national awards at the weekend during its 32nd International Fundraising Conference where more than 700 delegates attended.

Sue-Anne Wallace, FIA’s CEO, says this year a special session at the Conference reviewed emergency fundraising as a result of the Victorian Bushfires.

And the winners are:
Most Outstanding Fundraising Project of the Year:
UNHCR PricewaterhouseCoopers Power of 10 Initiative (NSW) Power of 10 is a global initiative run by Australia for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and created by UNHCR in partnership with accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to address the lack of education in refugee camps.

The key objective was to provide education to children from Darfur, something most believed not possible before. Since 2003, over 200,000 people in Darfur have lost their lives and more than 240,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Eastern Chad. Over 10 days in June 2008, more than $5 million was raised by Australia for UNHCR. Power of 10 is the largest corporate initiative in UNHCR history.

Two projects were commended:
Ear Science Institute Australia Break the Silence Campaign (WA) a leading research organisation based in Perth, for a campaign that raised in excess of $12m to build a facility and coordinated clinical research. Lifeline Australia Stress Down on 24/7 (ACT) an awareness and fundraising campaign.

As well, three volunteers were recognised for their outstanding contributions to society. Raymond ‘Pedals’ Jones was nominated by the Mary Potter Foundation Inc, Adelaide, for the Ride for Love, which aims to increase public awareness of the Mary Potter Hospice to the broader community and community leaders.

Dr Wallace says Ray (or ‘Pedals’ as he is widely known) is a dedicated and energetic 88 year old cyclist who has given his time, energy, friendship and service for over 17 years to The Mary Potter Foundation.

The Foundation added that between 1991 and 2008 he has raised over $120,000.00 through sponsorship of his annual 50km Ride for Love.

Robert Thompson nominated by Cancer Council WA for Relay for Life a 24 hour fundraising event with up to 175 teams camping out and maintaining a relay-style walk around Perry Lakes stadium.

Dr Wallace says Rob has taken on the task of project management for eight years which is an incredible achievement which can sometimes only be appreciated by others working behind the scenes.

Natalina Paganoni has been a loyal volunteer of the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital’s Frankston Auxiliary for the past 30 years. Today, aged 95, Natalina continues to support the Frankston Friends in fundraising efforts for the Eye & Ear Hospital with her own independent fundraising enterprise in her nursing home.

When Natalina moved into Domain Gardens Nursing Home in 1999, she decided to open a stall in its foyer to raise funds for the Eye & Ear Hospital.
