The Organisation

The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) is the registered union for all nurses, midwives, and assistants in nursing and midwifery in NSW. The NSWNMA represents the industrial interests of nurses, midwives, and assistants in nursing and midwifery employed in NSW in the public, private, aged care and disability sectors. Our role is to protect the interests of nurses, midwives, and the nursing and midwifery professions as well as advocate for the community in advancing a world-class, well-funded, integrated health system.

The NSWNMA also represents and provides for the professional, educational, and industrial welfare of nurses and midwives in government and non-government forums at state, national and international levels.

The NSWNMA has over 76,000 members and is affiliated to Unions NSW and the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). The NSWNMA works in association with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation.

The Role

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the union. You will work closely with the General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary and the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement operational strategies that support the mission, vision, and goals.

You will develop internal capability to support the implementation of the strategic plan, providing analysis and advice and assist in monitoring progress.
Your key responsibilities will also include;

  • Overseeing the management of the financial and human resources, information technology, the member journey, and implementing programs and initiatives ensuring proper allocation and resources
  • Provide overall leadership and guidance, ensuring a positive and productive work environment including the training and equipping of staff to carry out their roles and responsibilities
  • Developing and maintaining a strong relationship with all stakeholders, including Councillors, partners and vendors, to support the mission and goals
  • Foster a culture of innovation by identifying new ways to achieve goals and objectives, and implementing solutions that drive continuous improvement and growth
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies, overseeing compliance with all laws, regulations and policies.


Skills Required

You’re a confident leader and stakeholder manager operating at a senior level in a similar operational role, championing and adding value and sustainability to business services practices and models. You have equivalent qualifications, and ideally with knowledge and understanding of unionism, membership organisations and a campaign driven organisational culture. You have a genuine interest and passion for protecting workers’ rights, and for social change. You have a commitment to a diverse, equitable and inclusive working environment.

You’re able to demonstrate a track record of success in:

  • Working as part of a leadership team, demonstrating values-based leadership that values accountability, transparency, timely delivery and collaboration
  • Strong financial, risk and change management skills, with the ability to oversee the management of all the financial and human resources, IT and the member journey
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of democracy, equity, and social justice
