Monarchs in Melbourne bring the butterfly effect

Residents were all in a flap over a program that saw them watch the butterflies grow from pupa to fully-fledged winged beauty before releasing them into the world.

Aged care residents in Melbourne are feeling the full force of the butterfly effect as they take part in a monarch butterfly hatching program.

The team at Allity’s Princeton View aged care home in Brighton East bought chrysalis kits from Tasmania and installed them on plants in the home’s private dining room, where residents could watch their progress.

Just four days later, around 25 butterflies hatched and began to flutter around the dining room according to Princeton View general manager Linda Potter.

Potter said the residents loved experiencing the lifecycle of the butterflies.

Two days later the butterflies were released into the wild of the world.

“It was an amazing experience and even more so because they flitted around our garden for a few days before disappearing,” she said.

Plans are already in place for the home to welcome a new generation of butterflies in the future.
