Gunawirra celebrates Aboriginal Children's Day 2022

Joshua Staines, chairperson of community-led children and families charity Gunawirra, welcomes you to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day and offers some links so you can learn more about its importance.
Welcome to National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day!
Today, communities across Australia will be coming together to celebrate and show support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The significant date has been celebrated since 1988 and was establish by the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC).
This year’s theme ‘My Dreaming, My Culture’ emphasises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ intrinsic connection to country, community and culture.

Gunawirra, a community-led organisation that works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families is on its way to Kempsey. Teaming up with Yarn, Gunawirra will be celebrating with the Dalaigur and Scribbly Gum Pre-Schools.
Gunawirra is also trying to source 1200 children’s Aboriginal t-shirts to be sent to 23 preschools in rural and remote NSW to celebrate the day.
Gunawirra’s CEO and renowned first nations artist Graham Toomey is calling for more community organisations to come forward and “help celebrate the next generation”.
“We all have a role in supporting and empower our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children. They need to grow up in communities that value our history, heritage and culture. It is at the core of our identity as Australians,” he said.
