Innovation doesn’t have to be an expensive, time-consuming or complex process!
In this panel discussion, we will chat to three not for profit CEOs and senior leaders who are sky-rocketing their projects’ impact by creating a culture of innovation.
We will explore some fantastic examples of Aussie organisations with cultures that foster ‘person-centred innovation’, and share some practical ways you can easily create a more organically innovative culture in your organisation.
You will hear from:
- Felicity McMahon – Head of Programs at Starlight Children’s Foundation (winner of AFR’s most innovative government, education and not for profit award 2020) on how Starlight have an end to end process that allows them to successfully innovate at scale.
- Nic Brown – CEO at baytr on how batyr have set up sustainable ways to involve young people and those with a lived experience in their decision making at all levels of the organisation.
- Dr Caitlin Barr – CEO at Soundfair (formerly Better Hearing Australia, Vic) on how Soundfair are setting their people up for success and creating a culture where people feel supported to innovate.
During the session, you will:
- Hear inspiring stories from our panel as they share how they are innovating to increase their social impact
- Discover practical examples of ways you can create a culture of innovation within your organisation, right now
- Learn about “person-centred innovation”, and the benefits of collaboration and involving people with lived experience into your projects
- Have the ability to interact with our panel to ask questions and seek their advice on how to implement these practices

On the panel:
Felicity McMahon
Head of Programs, Starlight Foundation
In her role as Head of Programs, Felicity leads Starlight’s in-hospital and community based programs across Australia as well as Starlight’s Research and Evaluation and Program Innovation. Each year the Starlight Programs team of 300 people create over 600,000 experiences for seriously ill children and young people. Through play, creativity and social connection, Starlight supports children and young people in some of their toughest times and positively changes their health care experience. In 2019 Felicity was recognised in the Impact 25 awards that recognise individuals contributing to positive social change.
As part of the Starlight Executive team, Felicity is the whole-oforganisation lead for innovation and in 2020 Starlight was recognised in the AFR Innovation Awards as the most Innovative organisation in Australia in the Government, Education and Not-for-Profit sector
Nic Brown
CEO, batyr.
After Graduating from Southern Cross University in 2011, Nic has spent most of his career in Not for Profit organisations as well as working for State and Local Government. Working with young people in Australia and overseas has been the main focus in each of these roles. In 2015 he began work at batyr as the School Program Manager in the early stages of batyr’s growth. During the past 6 years Nic has undertaken a number of roles at batyr all of which are providing valuable experience in preventative education, mental health, suicide prevention and the importance of sharing lived experience stories in schools, universities and workplaces.
Nic has sat on advisory committees for the Global Coalition for Youth Mental Health and on the Integrated Content Technical Advisory Group for the Beyond Blue National Education Initiative and currently sits on Suicide Prevention Australia’s Policy Committee. He believes in maintaining positivity through adversity and in values driving organisational and leadership decision making.
Dr Caitlin Barr
CEO, Soundfair
Caitlin naturally despises failure. And yet, in her role as CEO of Soundfair, she has embraced the courage needed to create a culture of innovation within a small, 90 year-old charity that was ripe for transformation. With a background as a health professional and in research, alongside a passion for questioning the status quo, Dr Barr brings a genuine belief in the power of storytelling and lived experience to her leadership roles. After realising that a missing piece of the puzzle in the research world was the ability to ‘get it wrong’ and truly ‘work alongside end-users’, Caitlin finds innovation culture is a platform for her and her team to create a new future for the organisation and its’ constituency (people with hearing conditions).
