Here’s why you shouldn’t be scared of changing jobs in uncertain times

Change is hard, and when things are so unpredictable it’s even harder. We take a look at why that shouldn’t stop you.

High unemployment levels and job insecurity have been some of the most talked about issues of 2020.

For those who made it through the worst of COVID still employed, the thought of giving up a stable job to fight it out in a super competitive job market might seem ridiculous.

But is it really the worst thing to be looking around for something better if you’re unhappy or in desperate need of change during uncertain times?

According to Helen Green from Career Confident it’s not ridiculous at all, and there are still a whole bunch of reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid to branch out.

Hey Helen! So first off, what are some indications that it might be time for a person to look for a new job?

Common indicators it’s time to consider a new job or career opportunity include a change in your health, financial or personal situation, newly-defined career goals, the culture of your workplace, a desire for promotional opportunities or the completion of study or training.

Don’t underestimate the impact of being generally unhappy at work, overly stressed or feeling your work conflicts with your values as this can adversely impact your physical and mental wellbeing. Other reasons include lack of career growth or professional development opportunities in your current role, feeling bored, unfulfilled, or “stuck” in a position that doesn’t suit you. The reasons are personal and may be as simple as outgrowing your role and seeking a new and exciting challenge or wanting to scale back your responsibilities.

What are some things that might be stopping a person changing jobs at the moment?

I am seeing many clients wanting to change jobs or careers, yet [who are] fearful of leaving their current employer in a competitive market for multiple reasons. These include financial concerns, an assumption that few jobs exist and they wouldn’t be competitive enough, other’s opinions, potential loss of entitlements accumulated with their current employer, media commentary about the current job market, and a perception that they may be “first out the door” if they move jobs and their employer needs to downsize.

Some of people’s fears relate to not knowing where to look for new opportunities and how to access the hidden job market.

Should they still go for opportunities anyway?

Even in a competitive market, terrific opportunities exist. People should remain open to possibilities and not be afraid of applying for positions that provide them with career development opportunities and align with their strengths, values, and preferred way of working.

There’s no ignoring the fact COVID-19 has resulted in job losses across many sectors, but it’s not all bad news. Opportunities exist in current and emerging sectors with some experiencing growth in demand.
