Ways motivate your staff through the pre-Christmas slump

We look into the top ways managers are motivating their staff in the last few months before the Christmas break

With Christmas fast approaching, motivating your staff in the final few months of the year can be tricky. Lucky for you, we’re here to help.

Di Francois, people and culture director for Save the Children, says for many charities the last few months of the year can be massive, working around the clock to fundraise for Christmas appeals and supporting people through Christmas-time natural disasters.

But because it’s also the end of the year, many staff are pretty worn out. So here, Di shares her top tips on keeping energy levels up.

Shake it up

Coming into work each day and working at their desk on their usual tasks can drive your staff into a bit of a rut. Running workshops or even just working out doors can help freshen everyone up.

“We’ve had a speaker who’s come into our Melbourne office to run sessions on resilience or women in leadership or how to develop your personal brand,” Di explains.

“It’s important to get people out of their day-to-day mode and re-energize them around their own career and their own development.”

Silly season activities

Planning end of year events to celebrate the team’s hard work is a good way to spark energy levels, and it gives you an opportunity to look back on all you’ve achieved.

“When we look back on and recognise some of the great achievements of our staff out in the field, that re-energizes everybody about what we’re here for, why we do the work we do,” she says.

Planning for the future

While it may be the end of one year, setting plans in place for the future is a sure fire way to stir some excitement.

“Setting goals for the future is a really easy way for managers to pump their staff up. It also gives you the chance to get out of the office to have a team lunch or go out to dinner together and just connect in a different space,” she says.
