Meet the taskforce experts leading the way on social impact investing
5 September 2019 at 8:14 am

Dr Catherine Brown, Danny Gilbert AM and Sally McCutchan have been appointed to join the Social Impact Investing Taskforce Expert Panel.

The trio, who bring a wealth of experience across the social impact investing, social enterprise and government sectors, will join Michael Traill AM and Amanda Miller, who were announced as chair and deputy chair of the panel in April

The role of the panel is to support the Social Impact Investing Taskforce, announced as part of the 2019-20 budget, in developing a strategy for the Commonwealth’s role in the social impact investment market.

Traill said he was enthusiastic about the formation of the panel and collective expertise of its members.

“I am excited about the wealth of experience across the expert panel to develop practical recommendations to underpin a cohesive, strategic approach to achieving better outcomes through social impact investing,” he said.

Brown, who joined the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation as CEO in 2011, is a lawyer with experience in the not-for-profit and philanthropic sectors as a strategic and governance advisor, lawyer and executive.

Gilbert is co-founder and managing partner of Gilbert + Tobin. He is also a board member of the Business Council of Australia, co-chair of Cape York Partnership Group Pty Limited and chair of Western Sydney University Foundation.

McCutchan is CEO and executive director of Impact Investing Australia, as well as a non-executive director of Indigenous Business Australia Asset Management, Oxfam Australia and two National Australia Bank securitisation companies.

According to the terms of reference for the taskforce, which were released on Monday, the aim of the taskforce is to identify a way forward for Commonwealth investments in social impact investment, including how SII can provide solutions to address entrenched disadvantage and some of society’s most intractable social problems.

The taskforce will engage with state and territory governments, the private, not-for-profit sectors, philanthropy, and relevant Commonwealth agencies in the development of the strategy.

The expert panel is expected to provide an initial report to government by the end of 2019, and a final strategy by mid-2020.
