NDIS Reaches Participant Milestone

The National Disability Insurance Scheme has reached a milestone with more than 250,000 people now accessing the scheme, including almost 80,000 people receiving support for the first time.
Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher announced the figures on Monday, and said the Coalition government had been driving hard to get the NDIS fully rolled out across Australia.
“Reaching this milestone means that a quarter of million Australians with a disability are now being empowered to live their best life and achieve their goals,” Fletcher said.
Assistant Social Services Minister Sarah Henderson added that it was great to see more Australians with disability were receiving supports for the first time because of the NDIS.
“Almost one in three Australians receiving supports under the NDIS are receiving support for the very first time,” Henderson said.
These figures provide an update to the latest NDIS quarterly data which showed 208,793 Australians were accessing the scheme by 30 September 2018.
This announcement comes after the NDIS recently commenced its final roll out into the last remaining regions in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania.
The NDIS is expected to be fully rolled out across Australia by 2020.
At full scheme, the NDIS is estimated to support 460,000 people with disability and create 90,000 jobs in the disability sector across the country.
